Corporate Social Responsibility
Realizing the importance of offering something for the upliftment of the society,
the Borderlands Group has endeavored, in its own small way, to make a difference
in the lives of the people of the local community. Not lagging behind in its Corporate
Social Responsibility, the Borderlands, in conjunction with Nepal River Conservation
Trust (NRCT), organizes the Annual River Festival at the amazing Bhote Koshi River
and lobbies for its preservation as well. The Managing Director of the group, Mr.
Megh Ale, is also the Founder President of NRCT, an organization that is actively
involved in conserving Nepal's Himalayan river system, preserving the cultural heritage
and developing an environmentally responsible tourism industry.
Apart from supporting the annual Bagmati River Festival organized by NRCT on the
occasion of the World Environment Day (June 5), the group also supports the Wetlands
Day celebrations. Similarly, the group is operating the Borderlands Resort as an
Eco Adventure Resort by minimizing the use of plastic bags, playing a vital role
in the preservation of the local forest area, minimizing the negative impact to
local flora and fauna, encouraging the use of biodegradable products, and being
actively involved in raising awareness about tree plantation. Providing employment
opportunities to the locals is yet another effort on the group's part which can
be proven from the fact that 90 % of the Resort's staffs are local people. In addition,
the group plays a vital role in supporting and managing 5 local schools namely:
1. Kali Devi Lower Secondary School : The group has been supporting
this proposed secondary school, located in Gati Village, Sindhupalchowk, for the
last 8 years.
2. Seti Primary School : This School is located at Dadakateri,
Sindhupalchowk and we are affiliated with it since last year.
3. Ram Rajya Primary School and Sayapatri Kindergarten : Both these
schools are located in Dangsin, Syangja and we have been supporting it for the past
2 years.
4. Deep Jyoti Primary School : Located in Sakhuwa, Sindhupalchowk,
and this school has been getting Borderlands' assistance for the past 2 years.
Making a Difference through 'VOLUNTOURISM'
VolunTourism is a relatively new concept in the Nepalese tourism industry. However,
it is getting a lot of momentum due to the fact that these activities have made
a profound impact in uplifting the lives of the community people. A profit making
socially responsible company, the Borderlands has been organizing various community
based programs to make a difference in the lives of the local people, their culture
and society. In line with this, the Borderlands offer various 'VolunTourism' packages
that are based on the availability of your time and your interest area. If you relish
the idea of extracting purpose and meaning from your travel experience, Volun Tourism’
is the right activity for you apart from the other multi-adventure packages that
the Borderlands has to offer.
The Volun Tourism activities that the Borderlands offers ranges from a couple of
days to more than 3 months depending upon your time and availability (we highly
recommend volunteers to undertake programs that are at least a month long). Some
of the programs that we offer include: cleanup campaigns and tree plantation campaigns,
addressing social causes, environmental education, painting schools or building
roofs of local schools, assisting in building an entire block of the local school,
building model toilets for the community people or being involved on a long term
basis as a teacher, or volunteering to build roads. We also offer other learning
experiences like: gathering knowledge about woodcrafts (Nepal is renowned all over
the world for the intricate woodcrafts) and learning to weave. These activities
guarantee self-satisfaction and make you feel good about yourself as you can positively
influence the lives of the village people. It will be a learning experience for
the volunteers as they get to know about a different culture and tradition and also
get to visit the rural yet beautiful places of Nepal.
